PBJ has announced its participation in the UMPC revolution. PBJs UMPC goes by the name of “Smart Caddie” and features parts a bit different from the rest of the “gang”. For example ASUS, Samsung and Founder all use Intel’s Celeron M ULV at 900 MHz, and as for Smart Caddie, this UMPC will use VIA’s (apparently some Japanese company) C7-M CPU ULV. The processor is claimed to a be a bit better than Intel’s for it competes directly with Pentium M, and runs at 1 GHz.

The chipset in the device called VN800, as well as the South Bridge dubbed VT8237R, and the integrated S3-Grafik also are supplied by VIA. The Smart Caddie also features integrated Bluetooth connectivity and WLAN for wireless internet access. Even though these functions are featured in all of the announced UMPCs the system still greatly differs from the rest. Data can be stored on a hard drive measuring 2.5”, and has a battery life a bit shorter than all the rest, for only 2.5 hours on one charge compared to the 3-4 hours on the Q1 from Samsung.

Either way this UMPC greatly differs from all the rest in that the processor is much different and from a different company, the battery life is a bit too short, and there is still no word as to what operating system or OS will it come with. One thing that makes the Smart Caddie stand above the rest though is the processor speed, for it runs at 1GHz, instead of 900MHz as all the rest will most likely will. Still no word on the pricing though there is a rmor that it will cost around 1000 Euro, or around 1,190 USD. More info will be available on PBJ’s web site on the 13th of this month.
